At Pathway Kids, we don't just provide childcare; we cultivate a vibrant learning environment where every child is recognized as a capable, curious, and unique individual. Our philosophy centers around the belief that early childhood is a critical period for development, and our approach is deeply rooted in fostering a lifelong love of learning. This is why we wholeheartedly embrace the FLIGHT Curriculum, Alberta's esteemed early learning framework.
Delving Deeper into the FLIGHT Curriculum
So, what exactly is the FLIGHT Curriculum, and why is it so integral to our educational approach? FLIGHT is more than just a set of guidelines; it's a comprehensive framework that emphasizes holistic child development. It recognizes that children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences. Unlike rigid, prescriptive curriculums, FLIGHT is flexible and responsive, allowing educators to tailor learning experiences to meet the individual needs and interests of each child.
Key aspects of the FLIGHT Curriculum include:
Play-Based Learning: FLIGHT champions play as the primary vehicle for learning. Through imaginative play, children develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and social-emotional competencies.
Exploration and Discovery: The curriculum encourages children to explore their environment, ask questions, and make discoveries. Educators act as facilitators, guiding children's learning journeys and providing opportunities for hands-on exploration.
Meaningful Experiences: FLIGHT emphasizes creating learning experiences that are relevant and meaningful to children's lives. This might involve connecting learning to real-world contexts, incorporating children's interests, and fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity.
Holistic Development: FLIGHT addresses all aspects of child development, including social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth. It recognizes that these areas are interconnected and that children learn and develop as whole beings.
Relationship-Based Approach: FLIGHT places a strong emphasis on building positive relationships between children, educators, and families. A sense of belonging and connection is essential for children's well-being and learning.
Documentation and Reflection: Educators are encouraged to document children's learning journeys through observations, photos, and videos. This documentation serves as a valuable tool for reflection, planning, and communication with families.
At Pathway Kids, we bring the FLIGHT Curriculum to life through carefully planned activities and experiences that are designed to spark children's curiosity and ignite their imaginations. Our educators are trained to observe children's interests and needs, and to create learning opportunities that are both engaging and developmentally appropriate.
A Glimpse into March's Learning Adventures
This month, we're diving into a variety of exciting themes and learning experiences that align with the FLIGHT Curriculum. March is a time for music, movement, and joyful celebrations!
Music & Movement: Children will explore rhythm, melody, and movement through singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. This fosters gross motor skills, coordination, and creative expression.
Nursery Rhymes: We'll be singing classic nursery rhymes, reciting poems, and engaging in storytelling activities. We will also be exploring themes around teddy bears, and other beloved childhood toys. This helps children develop language skills, phonemic awareness, and a love of literature.
St. Patrick's Celebration: We'll celebrate St. Patrick's Day with fun, festive activities that introduce children to Irish culture and traditions.
Social Skills: Practicing focus and patience is a key social skill that we will be working on. We play games, and do activities that help children to wait their turn, and listen.
Bible Verse: Psalm 37:7 – "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him." We will be working on memorizing this verse, and talking about what it means to be patient.
Academic Focus: The letters Ff and Zz, the number 7, the color green, and the rectangle shape will be integrated into our daily activities, providing children with opportunities to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills.
