Why Gratitude Starts at Home (and How We Reinforce It at Daycare)

Thanksgiving may be behind us, but at Pathway Kids, we believe gratitude shouldn’t be something we celebrate only once a year. The spirit of thankfulness is something we can nurture in children every single day — through our words, our actions, and the way we treat others.

At Pathway Kids in Northeast Calgary, we focus on helping children grow not only academically, but also emotionally and spiritually. Gratitude is a big part of that. From saying “thank you” to friends for sharing toys, to recognizing the beauty in a simple nature walk, we teach children to pause, notice, and appreciate the world around them.

In our play-based classrooms, opportunities to practice gratitude happen naturally.

During group activities, children learn to take turns and encourage one another. During snack time, we thank God for the food we’ve been given. When a friend helps with cleanup, we acknowledge their kindness. These small, everyday moments are where character development begins.

We also believe gratitude starts at home — and continues to grow through partnership with parents. Families can model thankfulness by talking about what they’re grateful for during dinner, praying together, or making a “thankful jar” where children can add notes of appreciation throughout the week. When children see thankfulness practiced consistently at home and reinforced at daycare, it becomes part of who they are.

At Pathway Kids, our goal is to raise kind, compassionate, and thankful children who see goodness in the world and choose to spread it.
